Facebook
Summary entry description
People under 25 made up roughly 41% of the global population last year. To help brands get to know this growing generation and its growing influence, Facebook wanted to present it in a way that had never been done before. It was our mission to make this vision a reality, helping the team to create a multi-touch campaign about Generation Z, in the words of Gen Zers themselves. We led the creative direction of an entire digital report and cross-market social campaign, working on everything from initial concepting to final delivery. We knew we had to go beyond what was expected of B2B content and so, we focused on capturing the rebellious nature of Gen Zers in our design. We disrupted layouts, mixed colour palettes and experimented with typography, pushing this identity across all supporting collateral and campaign video—designed by us and directed by Basma Khalifa.

Disassembly Instructions

Company
RAPP
Client
IKEA
Summary entry description
IKEA have a target to inspire and enable 1 billion people to live more sustainably by 2030. A number of initiatives such as their Buy-back scheme, circularity hub, and their phasing out of single-use plastics are all contributing to this. But there’s still a perception that their furniture is non-durable and disposable, which means a lot of it ends up in landfill. Our job was to create something that enables customers to take action. In a smart, simple way that’s affordable and achievable for everyone. The answer was just that. We took the iconic IKEA assembly instructions. And completely re-designed them, in reverse, matching the style precisely to create a set of Disassembly Instructions for their most popular products. We completely changed the one thing IKEA never change, their assembly instructions. And in doing so, we solved an environmental and durability concern at the same time.

Defining a Mission for the future of Penguin Random House UK

Company
DesignStudio
Client
Penguin Random House UK
Summary entry description
Penguin and Random House merged in 2013, forming the world's largest publisher. Seven years on, PRH UK approached DesignStudio to help resolve their internal cultural unification. As a collection of independent divisions, PRH UK publishes 2,000 books a year of almost every genre. Despite this diversity, a shared Mission was needed to galvanise the company. After months of collaboration we defined a new mission statement –– “We make books for everyone, because a book can change anyone.” supported by a set of guiding Principles. These went on to inform business decisions, recruitment policies, responsible strategy, publishing decisions, website editorial, campaigns & events, all focused on the change that the Mission inspires – and this is only the beginning.

Channel Four Television Corporation Report and Financial Statements 2019

Company
Emperor
Client
Channel 4
Summary entry description

Channel 4 is one of the few broadcasters whose purpose is to have as much social impact as possible. Our brief was to deliver Channel 4’s remit by understanding, addressing and even celebrating the challenges, inequalities and anxieties that exist for individuals and society.

Channel 4 looked to us to reflect this when developing the strategy, structure and visual concept of the report. We were encouraged to think disruptively and challenged to reflect the brand’s personality, whilst still delivering the content that matters.

This year, our inspiration came from their “Complaints Welcome” campaign which celebrated Channel 4’s identity: challenging the way its viewers think about the world.

We crafted the report’s design to reflect their spirited, irreverent nature by celebrating its remit through humour, honesty and taking creative risks. We turned negatives into positives by championing what makes Channel 4 challenging, creative and commercially successful.

Public Finance

Company
Redactive
Client
Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)
Summary entry description
Is it possible to make a dry subject like accountancy and public spending visually interesting? That was the question sitting at the heart of our 2020 relaunch of Public Finance magazine. Reader research revealed our audience wanted their publication to deliver higher-level, ‘big-picture’ content while receiving breaking news through CIPFA’s web channels and newsletters. Meanwhile, we wanted to ensure greater gender and racial diversity across the magazine, to truly reflect the modern profession. A 50% increase in pagination presented the opportunity to introduce a cleaner, clearer and more contemporary design. A new masthead and modern fonts are accompanied by bold cover designs and content illustrations which grab readers’ attention. The result is a product more akin to a coffee table magazine than the dense style of the traditional trade publication.

JATO ‘Precision Under Pressure’ brand illustrations

Company
Omobono
Client
JATO
Summary entry description
JATO are the world leaders in car data. They came to Omobono for a rebrand that reflected that status. Their previous brand showcased details of cars as they could not show recognisable cars in their marketing materials, as they did not want to show a preference to any manufacturer. Illustrations helped them neatly resolve this problem. Our new brand idea for them was ‘Precision Under Pressure’. Our illustrations needed to reflect that through precise lines and sharp edges. They wanted to show that their data could be used in an editorial manner, to illustrate stories about the car industry. We wanted to inject a new sense of sophistication into the brand, borrowing codes from high-end magazines like The Economist and the world of art. This is why we created a bespoke set of illustrations. Inspired by Salvador Dali, these illustrations could be used in advertising, trade shows and editorial content.

Breaking new ground with Fifa 21 Volta Groundbreakers

Company
Studio BLUP
Client
EA Sports
Summary entry description
With only 3 seconds to grab attention on social, EA Sports invited Studio BLUP to support their launch of FIFA 21 Volta Groundbreakers. With only a brand toolkit and Volta logos to play with, our creative approach was simple: 'Stop the scroll on social' by effectively injecting dynamic energy into the creative to reflect the adrenaline and pace of football gameplay. With only a brand toolkit and logo to play with, BLUP dissected the shapes and original assets to develop a visual remix that reimagined the Volta 21 identity. The creative direction focussed on blending mixed media elements with textures and typography. Precision layering and timing ensured our motion graphics perfectly dovetailed with each new asset’s audio track to produce truly standout social content. Through our creative portrayal, Studio BLUP gave the identity of Volta football a diverse refresh and re-wrote the narrative for modern sports video gaming.

Tate: Turner's Modern World

Company
Rokabye
Client
Tate
Summary entry description

Rokabye were appointed to create Tate’s first ever fully CG trailer for Turner’s Modern World. Turner was a master of his age; a progressive renegade who documented a time of dizzying change. Our challenge was to bring this to life, creating a trailer that would excite and invigorate his masterpieces clearly, while conveying relevance to today’s mainstream gallery audience. Some of Turner’s most famous paintings were used as the foundation to build a 3D world filled with texture that depicted the age and huge social change that Turner witnessed. His brush strokes construct every element. The colour and tone he used is the basis for the lighting and an ever-shifting pace depicts his changing world view. This was an enticing new depiction of Turner’s art. The film ran across social media, YouTube, online and VOD prior to the Tate welcoming back visitors after lockdown last year.

After months of collaboration we defined a new Mission statement –– “We make books for everyone, because a book can change anyone.” The key to introducing the new Mission internally came down to capturing it through a launch film made up entirely from PRH UK archive and existing footage, representative of all aspects of the business. The film highlights all kinds of change: big, small, profound or simple, and used as an inspirational tool to inform everything from publishing principles and recruitment policies to campaigns & events –– and this is only the beginning.

Sport the unexpected

Company
Studio BLUP
Client
Reebok & Sports Direct
Summary entry description
Training for everyday fitness goes far beyond the inside walls of a gym or weights room. So to launch Reebok's new Flexagon range in Sports Direct, Studio BLUP developed a unique concept and creative approach - Move away from what is expected in a typical fitness shoot and re-write the narrative to ‘Sport the Unexpected’. We brought ‘the gym’ into a disused music arena playing with the vast concrete space and floor levels. Our approach represented diversity in workout styles and environments to show that fitness is as individual as the person themselves. A bespoke soundtrack was carefully synchronised to the energy, mindset and performance of the models in shot, whilst typographic and graphic overlays gave the films a raw yet artistic finish. We deliberately featured both action shots and those important time-out moments to reflect the real behaviours of people when they work out.

Summary entry description
Package an entry level Gin in a distinctive manner. Ideally like no other. This is a very busy arena. Very competitive so, design something that is 'different'. Trying to steer clear of some of the commonly utilised graphics. Centred labels... add a back story. This is a brand new gin and so it has to make its own ground by being just what it is. Clean, fresh and sharp (a characteristic of gin itself). Objective - sales and brand positioning and high ranking re taste, design and presence on and off line. Build a loyal following online. Stand out on the gantry. It has to work hard back there. Be desirable enough to keep the bottle. Not bin it.

Internally we say "these are the products Mother Nature intended for the world.” We knew challenging the beverage space with clean ingredients would require our packaging to be no different, featuring bright and bold colors of Earth, ingredient illustrations and clean and playful typefaces.

Sunwink’s product packaging design draws from nature and our Earth. The iconic blue is dreamy and atmospheric while also energetic and powerful. Sunwink’s color palette is magnetic, alive and inviting.

We believe in the power of plants for everyone, and Sunwink is designed for the masses. The bright colors and bold shapes captivate grocery shoppers and welcome online browsers. Our community shares how the branding draws them in and the ingredients keep them coming back.

Contact Less

Oliver Agency

Barclaycard Business
Summary entry description
In response to coronavirus, the contactless card limit was being raised to £45 – helping to reduce contact with cash and card readers. As the first to introduce contactless payments, Barclaycard wanted to let people know about this important step, and reassure them at such a worrying time. We devised a super-simple design that would stand out and work across all media – an icon of a fingerprint fading away to leave the four curved lines of the contactless symbol. This, together with a headline saying simply, “Contact. Less”, became a reassuring reminder of the literal safety benefit of the technology and the new, higher limit. The message landed with people. In the first 2 months, Barclaycard alone processed an extra 25m contactless payments. UK-wide, they increased by 40%, with an extra 1.4bn contactless transactions made in the first 6 months of the new limit.

Chapel

Chapel
Summary entry description
At only 3-years-old, Chapel has advanced well beyond its infancy. What started out as a one-man venture is now a design, content and illustration agency… We thought we’d give this triple threat thing a go. We’ve worked with some of the world’s leading B2B and B2C brands (Facebook, Snap, Soho House), helping them create iconic campaigns that cross borders, push limits and speak volumes. Not willing to stop there, we launched our illustration agency, The Different Folk, in September 2020. In just six months, we’ve signed 17 of the best contemporary artists from across the globe and collaborated with brand giants, like adidas, Die Zeit and Kurt Geiger. Collectively, we believe in allowing all creative ideas to be heard—no matter who they’re from. That’s why we’re supporting Brixton Finishing School in its mission to drive diversity, inclusivity and opportunity in our industry, paving the way for all future creators.

Mikey Stillwell : Beautiful, function-led, human-centric design.

Company
LAB Group

Mikey’s ability to spot opportunities, drive lasting change within the business and craft beautiful designs is beyond his youthful experience. Every design team needs a ‘Mikey’ to disrupt the norm, push the team forward and yet still produce beautiful designs.

Testimonial about Mikey from Sabrina, Head of UX at VERJ: “He has been instrumental in driving changes to our design process. He is forward-thinking and challenges existing thinking; Mikey is a mover and shaker. A strategic, reflective approach to design is very much needed nowadays, as the complexity of digital applications and the required knowledge of interaction design is rising. Mikey's background in Computer Science helps to connect the dots with our dev teams and makes Mikey and outstanding collaborator and mediator between the different worlds of tech and design.” Testimonial from Max Wiggens, Innovation and Insight Lead at LAB: Since I’ve known Mikey, there hasn’t been a challenge he couldn’t solve. His creative style is pragmatic, methodical and effective. Over the past 18 months, Mikey has instilled his style of thinking throughout the agency, leading to outstanding delivery for a number of clients and societal projects, such as our award-winning Food Bank Connecter project. Unlike many other creatives, Mikey’s background in computer science allows him to perfectly bridge the gap between front-end development and design - a crucial area that often gets overlooked. His take on atomic design and clever creative has been instrumental in driving the agency towards high quality work. I have worked closely with Mikey on our current InnovateUK grant project, where he has executed a number of psychological ‘games’ that not only look brilliant and serve their purpose, but are also extremely intuitive to interact with."

A Baxter & Bailey Zoommas

Baxter & Bailey
Summary entry description
The annual agency festive card is usually a chance to send something enjoyable to our clients and friends. For obvious reasons, this year was different. Could we make the Baxter & Bailey Christmas card relevant in the pandemic-stricken, WFH world whilst still being witty and warm? Could we make something delightful (and useful) to alleviate the general grimness that 2020 delivered? Eschewing the expected physical Christmas card, we crafted something digital for our home-working clients, partners and friends. We conceived and created a collection of 12 hand drawn, animated virtual backgrounds. Referencing lockdown, the festive season and on-screen life, our virtual backgrounds aimed to brighten up even the dullest video conference marathon. Happy Zoom-mas!

Weleda
Summary entry description

2021 marks the centenary of natural cosmetic brand, Weleda. To celebrate, they wanted to bring their brand purpose - ‘Reconnecting people with Nature’ to life through action, not comms. So we responded to the brief by building a new experiential and immersive website to tell their stories.

Designed with groundbreaking digital innovation and delivered with responsive UX, the accessible site features intuitive design and story telling in multi media formats alongside illustrated AR botanicals, 360 experiences and spatial sound design. We believed that if we could transport users to the beating heart of Weleda’s organisation- their botanical gardens, they would feel the brand’s purpose come to life in the palm of their hands. Reconnecting them with nature every time they visited the site.

The result- A truly beautiful digital wellness experience that entertains and relaxes whilst teaching users about the importance of conservation issues close to ours & Weleda's hearts.
